Teams Selected…

The teams for the ODIs and Tests in Ireland and England have been picked. The names that are absent are those of Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Munaf Patel.

Sehwag was showing signs of pulling it all together. So, this must be a huge setback for him. For a person who was the toast of the town and the team vice-captain until 6 months back, the slide has been dramatic.

Harbhajan Singh has been unable to see off the challenge from Romesh Powar.

Munaf Patel pays the price for a casual (and shocking) approach to fitness and fielding.

All three pay the price for a lackadaisical approach to their cricket. Given this is a core principle behind their axing, I am really not sure why Laxman is still in the Test team. Oh well…

The teams are:

Gautam Gambhir, Robin Uthappa, Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid (capt), Yuvraj Singh, Dinesh Karthik, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (vice-capt, wk), Rohit Sharma, Ramesh Powar, Ajit Agarkar, Piyush Chawla, Zaheer Khan, RP Singh, Sreesanth.

Wasim Jaffer, Dinesh Karthik, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid (capt), Sachin Tendulkar (vice-capt), Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (wk), Ramesh Powar, Anil Kumble, Zaheer Khan, Sreesanth, RP Singh, Ishant Sharma, Ranadeb Bose.

  1. Dropping these 3 folks – Sehwag, Harbhajan and Munaf makes very good sense. Not selecting Irfan also makes sense.

But Ghambir selection does not make sense – poor technique. Dinesh Mongia (not from TN, who had good success at England) would have been a better selection.

Ranabir Bose selection is also a question mark. VRV Singh – who is pacy – would have been a better choice. Zaheer, SreeSanth opening the attack, the third bowler becomes important. RP Singh seems to have some promise. The backup should have been VRV in my view.

Kumble is going to play in all tests. Powar may not get any chance.

  2. The reason for the selection of Laxman is elementary … 🙂 It was unfortunate he was dropped in Bangaladesh tests.

Dravid, Sachin and Laxman are the best batsmen for India. I would consider Karthik as the next best bat for India – not Ganguly or Yuvraj or Jaffer.
