India began their tour of England yesterday against Sussex. Dinesh Karthik (76), Gautam Gambhir ( 81), Rahul Dravid (57 no) and VVS Laxman (37 no) propped India upto 281/3.
There is an interesting story about tour games against counties in England. An English captain, turning out for his county, wanted a particular batsman to score runs, once his more competent and proficient competitior got out in the opposing side. So he asked his main bowler to just bowl a few hittable balls so that the guy could score and get selected for the Test team. After about an hour, the batsman ahd rttled up 80 odd runs in no time. The captain went upto the bowler and said, that was enough and that he could get him out now. The bowler replied “What do I think I have been trying to do for the last 5 overs?”
So the moral of the story – If Jaffer failed and Gambhir is found vulnerable against swing bowling then allow him to get a few!
