Send Yuvraj to Boarding School

During one stage of the game, my cousin remarked to me, ” Would they have asked Ricky Ponting to open the innings when Langer threw in the towel?”. He was furious with India’s decision to sacrifice Dravid (once again!) in order to accomodate “baby” Yuvraj. I thought the anger was thoroughly understandable. Compare this to Australia, when Phil Jacques was provided a chance he seized it and delivered. Maybe Yuvraj was done in by a bad decision in the first outing, but his brief stay did not in any way indicate that he is ready for real test cricket. His attitude and arrogance in both the innings only made things look worse. He needs to be sent to boarding school (I am currently under the spell of Aamir Khan’s latest, Taare Zameen Par) to gain some discipline. It is okay to have an attitude, I guess, if you have delivere

 I harp so much on the “accomodation” decision because I thought it cost us the match. You cannot go into a test match against Australia with accomodations and compromises. If Sehwag was taken on the tour (an original mistake), he should have played the first test. You simply cannot treat one of the world’s best no.3 batsman like a sacrificial lamb.

Now by bringing Sehwag in for the Sydney test as a reactive measure, you are setting expectations for him and that does not work either. Sehwag has to be provided with the license to kill. A boxing day test would have been the ideal situation for that.

I am hoping for a sensible strategy as far as team selection is concerned for the Sydney test. Is it asking for too much?

 Cheers,

Srikanth

  1. Sometimes its very disconcerting to know that you are among the minority who thinks a certain way, especially when the other train of thought has some stalwarts like Mukul Kesavan on their side. This is with reference to his article in Cricinfo about Dravid’s slow rate during the test match. Contrary to epinions I am reading across the web, I felt Dravid was the only person in the Indian team that played the match the way it should have been played, and I am referring to his second innings. He lasted 114 balls which was almost the second highest length of survival in the middle in the entire test match. The pitch had variable bounce and was more in favor of the bowlers than the batsman. The order of the day was to wear it out in the middle and make the aussies do the hard work. A draw would have been as big as a victory for us. I still cherish the chennai tie test for the session from morning till tea on the final day – the pure class of Gavaskar and Amarnath trying to neutralize the aussie attach on a very difficult fifth day pitch in Chennai. That is test match cricket. In every greatness, there is originality which is the reason why there is so much importance given to Intellectual Property Rights. Rahul Dravid is the only player in the Indian side today who is original in the true sense, and does what he thinks is right in every stage of his career, including his giving up the captaincy. Indian society is not mature enough to recognize it.

  2. a batsman is a batsman is a batsman. There is no such thing as an opener or Number 3 or 4. So often in recent years, Indian No 3 has to come to the crease in the first 5 overs and face the new ball attack.
    Dravid’s mind is no longer in the job. Or he is sending a message to ALL–selectors and spectators–that he is NOT HAPPY with any of their decisions. Dravid was ALLOWING Aussie bowlers to SETTLE INTO A LINE AND RHYTHM by blocking hittable balls. Dravid should be sent home –with any kind of explanation such as REST or ROTATION with a note NEVER TO BE PICKED AGAIN. Give the youngsters a taste of test cricket in Australia ie Gambhir, Uththappa, Chopra, Badrinath etc. Dhoni might be out of the test team by the time team India leaves the shores of Australia–no feet movement, lacks technique and temperment for 5 days of test cricket. Irfan Pathan should be picked for the next 3 tests , in place of Yuvraj–incidentally, when will YRS give back the CRORE and the PORCHE as penance for his current batting FORM!!!????

    Any of the 26 state officials travelling with Team India would be a better choice than YRS and RD.

  3. Sampath,

    While we are at it, why don’t we also have (1) Sachin Tendulkar banished to the Andamans for the 2nd innings shot that he played, (2) Sourav Ganguly sent to Nigeria for not making a 50 in either innings, (3) Laxman sent to Greenland for holing out to Michael Clarke in the 2nd dig,(4) Wasim Jaffer sent to a meat factory in Lokhandwala for his failures, (5) Harbhajan Singh sent to Southall for not taking any 1st innings wickets, (6) R. P. Singh sent to Zimbabwe for bowling badly, (7) Billy Bowden sent to Mars for not giving any of the 10 Anil Kumble LBW appeals. Huh?

    There is a limit to mass hysteria. Take a chill pill Sampath Kumar!

  4. Raghavan Mama,

    I have just had Neer More with asafoetida, salt, Karuveppilai and a delayed ganga snaanam— —AM COOL MAN NOW!!!!
    I agree with Items from 1 to 6—that leaves 2 players with no advice from you and me ie Z Khan and A Kumble —

    as an Umpire for the past 12 years in an Aussie Suburban League, (after 20 years of playing the game in Bangalore and Australia), including three as Director of Umpiring, I can’t send Bowden anywhere but to SCG next week– TV replays at slow motion speed showed that Umpires did an excellent job with LBW appeals. Mistakes helped or hindered both sides.
    Re Southall–Bhaji will have no trouble finding the place–Rly station has Southall written in Hindi!!

    If you get upset by 2 opinions and want to call it mass hysteria, you are the one that needs more than a chill pill–go back hybernating in one of the poles!!

  5. @bharath
    /stalwarts like Mukul Kesavan /

    Exsoos me?

    This is a guy who self avowedly has not played anything beyond gully cricket and that too about four or so decades ago.

    He is also of the view that ‘box’es ought to be worn with straps.

    Uses the self serving posit that ‘distance brings perspective’ while ignoring the fact that this is valid only with the experience of having faced at least the quick from the next suburb in a club game.

    Another of his self serving stances is that former cricketers do not make commentators/writers. While this certainly should apply to a couple I can think of, it also leaves Gower, Benaud, Atherton, Selvey, Gavaskar and other luminaries out in the cold.

    Sorry sir, I disagree that Kesavan is a cricketing luminary.

  6. With due apologies to 10yearslate, whether or not Mukul Kesavan is right or not is slightly irrelevant. Similarly, a debate on whether or not he is a luminary! He is a writer with a grouse against ex-cricketers who make a living doing what he does! 🙂

    I actually partially agree with Bharath. Indeed I said as much in my blog post too. I felt Dravid played gutsily and courageously in the 2nd innings (and hence the partial agreement with bharat’s comment). I do not subscribe to the Channel-9 comms view that the only way to show agression is totonk every ball for a 4 or a single! Look what happened to Sachin Tendulkar, who in my view, played totally irresponsibly. We tend to get carried away by these views by luminaries (or non-luminaries, as the case may be)!

    In my book, Dravid was aggressive too. His body language in the second innings suggested, “I am a rock. In order to win, move me”. The fact that the Australians did points more to their greatness as a team than to Dravid’s ineptness or otherwise. That stance from Dravid required fortitude and courage — aggressive…

    And I agree with bharath that Rahul Dravid is “the only player in the Indian side today who is original in the true sense, and does what he thinks is right in every stage of his career, including his giving up the captaincy. Indian society is not mature enough to recognize it”.

    However, I still maintain that his 1st innings dig required a different approach. He has time to clear the cobwebs from his mind and bat well again in Sydney.

  7. I guess Dravid opting to open to accomodate himself rather than Yuvraj. Yuvraj with his scintilatting ODI form and his recent 169 against PAK deserved his place. And onecant pass judgement based on one test failure. Although I do agree he has a big improvement point as far as playing good spin bowling is concerned.

    Dravid has done little of note in last 3 overseas tours and IMO the only non-performing middle order bat in the past 3 overseas series’. True , he had an amzing tour of Australia in 2003…thanks to a pedestrian attack and Stuart Mcgill’s gift. IMO Dravid is bad ball player and depends a lot on leg side half volleys and long hops for his runs( i do agree there can be none to compete his defensive technique and occupation of crease). He has been a constant failure against a full fledged Aussie attack apart from a few occassions in 2001( Aus tour of India).If you look at the 1999(Aus),2005 and the current series …he seems to be a player who cannot handle consistent and patient bowling in the corridor for long. Mind you, in all the series’ till date against Aussie he has managed occupation of crease to a great extent. It is only when confronted with a bunch of accurate bowlers( Mcgrath/Gillespie/Warne) that he seems to go into a shell and not score runs and finally get out with low strikes. a way ward bowler bowling at him can definetely ease some pressure…but I dont see any wayward stuff coming from the quickies …it is only brad hogg who is dependable.

  10. Our mission is to attract clients to trade on Forex!

    # 3-tier affiliate scheme – we pay 1/2 of spread for 1st level customers, 1/6 of spread for 2nd level customers and 1/18 of spread for 3rd level customers;
    # We pay up to 200 USD per order;
    # We pay up to 2000 USD per client;

    Example.
    You brought 1 client and 1 partner. Your partner brought 2 more clients and 2 more partners. Those partners (third level partners) brought 3 clients each. In such case, if all clients from all partners buy 2 lots of EURUSD with result of minus 30 pips and then sell 3 lots of GBPUSD with result of plus 40 pips, according to our MultiLevel program you will receive 71.5 USD + 23.83 USD * 2 + 7.94 USD * 3 = 142.98 USD instead of 71.5 USD that would be your bonus in case of single level partner program! It’s twice more! Hierarchy could be much bigger, and there could be much more clients!

    In the half year of slow work, I confidently went to daily profit of 320-400$, which is constantly growing.
