The resurrection of Sreesanth is complete…

It appears as if the new-look Sreesanth is back in the mix of things in Indian cricket! A new-and-improved Sreesanth minus slap-marks on his face and minus the pre-ball cross-my-heart-and-kiss-the-ball routine and minus the many metres of dingly-dangly thread around his neck (therein lies the clue to Ishant Sharma’s resurrection?) is back in Team India’s ODI and T20 teams for the matches against Sri Lanka! What’s more? He is also seeking out Harbhajan Singh for a hug everytime he takes a wicket! Someone please tell me he has turned vegetarian and is also writing a paper for Copenhagen!

Between 9 December and 27 December, India play Sri Lanka in 2 T20s and 5 ODIs.

The last T20 match India played was at the World Championship. The squad then read:

MS Dhoni, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Suresh Raina, Ishant Sharma, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Dinesh Karthik, Zaheer Khan, Praveen Kumar, Pragyan Ojha, Irfan Pathan, Yusuf Pathan, RP Singh

The team for India’s T20 games against Sri Lanka reads:

MS Dhoni, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Dinesh Karthik, Yusuf Pathan, R Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, Ashish Nehra, Sreesanth, Ashok Dinda, Sudeep Tyagi, Pragyan Ojha.

India’s WC T20 squad squad is sans Praveen Kumar, Zaheer Khan, Irfan Pathan, RP Singh and Ravindra Jadeja.

And unless my eyes deceive me, Harbhajan Singh also feels the selectors’ axe on his neck! Is that right?

The above in the 16-member WCT20 team are replaced in the 15-member Team India squad for the Sri Lanka T20s squad by Ashish Nehra, Ashok Dinda, Sreesanth, Sudeep Tyagi and R. Ashwin.

Other than the comfortable knowledge that he is from Chennai — which obviously makes a difference in the current set up in Team India — I still do not know what Dinesh Karthik is doing in the T20 team. But he certainly is there in the team!

After the WCT20 debacle in which India exited in the first round, something had to give. Players like Irfan Pathan and RP Singh had to go and re-learn their craft. Zaheer Khan is still not back to peak fitness. So these changes are understandable. But dropping Harbhajan Singh makes sense? I am not convinced that Praveen Kumar and Ravindra Jadeja deserve the chop too.

Having said that, I do think that India’s T20 squad is good and sports a balanced look. I expect the team sheet to read:

Virender Sehwag
Gautam Gambhir
MS Dhoni
Yuvraj Singh
Suresh Raina
Rohit Sharma
Yusuf Pathan / R Ashwin
Ashish Nehra
Sreesanth / Ashok Dinda
Pragyan Ojha
Sudeep Tyagi / Ishant Sharma (minus dingly-dangly neck-accessories?)

DRINKS: Dinesh Karthik

India’s squad for the first two ODIs against Sri Lanka has also been announced. Sreesanth makes it to the ODI team too! Munaf Patel has got the chop after the ODI series against Australia. Perhaps he needs to find the neck-accessories that Sreesanth discarded?

Amit Mishra has also been requested to cool his heels somewhere.

And since the selectors could not find a (any) leg-spinner in the whole of Tamil Nadu, Pragyan Ojha replaces Amit Mishra in the team! Further, Dinesh Karthik has been informed that he does not need to carry the drinks and so, loses his spot in the team!

The team for the first two ODIs reads:

Sachin Tendulkar
Virender Sehwag
Gautam Gambhir
Yuvraj Singh
MS Dhoni
Suresh Raina / Virat Kohli
Ravindra Jadeja
Harbhajan Singh
Praveen Kumar
Zaheer Khan / Sudeep Tyagi / Pragyan Ojha / Sreesanth
Ashish Nehra

The absence of Rohit Sharma from this team continues to baffle me. If I were his manager, I might ask him to either (a) wear some dingly-dangly bits around his neck and lose it in a hurry or (b) seek a transfer to Tamil Nadu!

  1. where were you when the Dodda Ganeshs, David Johnsons and Sujit somasundars where being selected.

  2. I was signing in exasperation then as I am, now! Two wrongs do not make a right! That said through though, at least Vishwanath and Kris Srikkanth are doing what they are in broad daylight and putting themselves up for scrutiny unlike someone like you posting as “Anonymous”! But then, it is your right and choice to be a coward.

  3. Whats in a name. I don’t think that leaving an anonymous comment a cowardly act. why should i leave my name / Horoscope on your Blog.

By the way – Vijay who is a Kris Srikanth selection Justified his selection.

Ashwin lead TN to Ranji ODI crown is turning be a fine allrounder. He did a great Job in T20 too, so deserves his selection.. TN won the T20 crown too.. So I’m not surprised when a TN player gets into the Indian Squad.

DK , did an impressive Job in T20’s , Guess he was getting signed for NSW..

So They are getting their deserved call ups..

Rohit Sharma has been given enough chances. I agree he is very talented but he needs to get runs to justify his talent..

I just want to say, its not about Kris Srikanth..

  4. That’s a bit harsh, Mohan 🙂

I don’t agree with a lot of Srikkanth’s decisions, but I wouldn’t necessarily attribute it to a TN bias.

I don’t think DK has a chance of getting a game purely as a batsman in T20. His best bet is when Dhoni is rested.

    My $0.02 –

    (1) Dropping Praveen Kumar and Jadeja from the T20 squad is just not right. The bowling for T20 looks pretty thin…(see (2))

    (2) Both Sreesanth and Ishant leak runs and IMHO, Ishant could be “rested” for the T20 too

    (3) Ashwin’s selection is not a bad one – He has a good economy rate and I think his bowling suits the T20 format. Not withstanding that he is from TN 😉 , I think it is time to try him out now.

  5. Oh, while we are on the topic of team selection, it could get interesting if Srikkanth Anirudha starts playing really well. It could pose an interesting predicament to the chairman of selectors – Would he be accused of nepotism if he gets picked (even on merit)?

I wonder if there has been a situation, where there has been a close father-son relationship in a coach-player or selector-player situation before in international cricket…(Chris Cowdrey’s name comes to mind)

  6. @ Anonymous

Mate. You are entitled to do what you want. You can leave your horror-scope or your house keys where you want to. You are driven by your compunctions, values and scruples. If you do not leave your name behind, in MY view, it is cowardly act. You are welcome to think that MY view is bad. Shrug… water off a ducks’ back as far as I am concerned! My view remains. As I said, at least Srikkanth and Vishwa put their decisions and views up for public scrutiny. Less said about your approach, the better! Huh!

    @blogesh

Yeah, I admit that my view is a bit harsh, but I do find the chop to Praveen Kumar and Jadeja (and the simultaneous entry of Ashwin) a bit strange and a bit hard to stomach.

Overall, while I think the selectors have been measured, considered and strategic about their approach to Test selection (and they certainly have the results to prove it) I think they have been ragged, disorganised, reckless and impetuous in their approach to the ODI and T20 selections.

Again, this is only my view…

  7. madhu sudan rao

May be–just may be that Dhoni, for a number of reasons, a match to match and day to day proposition and DK is on a permanent stanby position–to avoid expensive travel arrangements to fly him in and out so so frequentlt–his wife doesn’t like it and has told K Srikkanth’s Missus!

  8. I agree with you MohanK. That other “anonymous” dude is a silly trouble maker. Ignore him/her/it! I think they should have taken Badrinath instead of Ashwin…

  9. Applying the logic of one of this Blog’s Doyen, my namesake is owed an apology

Mr Dhoni–it is NOT Ranji trophy match you are playing!!1 You haven’t got any respect for Test Cricket–just another opportunity to score a cheap Hundred on the Tar Road of Mumbai–specially prepared for the Maharashtrian legenb who is disowned by his Elder Staesman !

  10. @sangakara

Don’t speak too soon. You may have to lick the humble pie that smashes into your face! This was a brilliant innings from Dhoni. It ensured that India will not have to bat again.

  11. What is cheap about scoring a hundred? Why was the lankan bowling so bad that it makes the hundred cheap? Or If the pitch was that easy to score then why didnt sangakkara/mahela not make even 50?
Please define respect for Test cricket here !!

  12. On 23 November 2009, Srikanth wrote–Sangakara–this is not ranji Trophy

I have every right to point this out Srikanth and co
That Dhoni didn’t declare when the lead was 200-250 as advocated by Srikanth

Dhoni DID bat on to get his 100

Along the way, killing the goose that lays golden eggs

What is good for the Lankans must be good for the Hindians!

  13. Who is a Hindian?

  14. My Tamil friends in Kandy tell me that for many years, anyone that doesn’t speak Hindi is not considered an Indian.

They tell me that India has Hindians and Non-Hindians.

With non-selection of talented Tamils, Team India has the look of Hindians.

  15. @sangakara

Hope the humble pie that you are licking off your face tastes nice. And please do not embarass yourself repeatedly with your amateur attempts at regional and linguistic politics.

  16. Srikanth Mangalam

    Sangakara,

the last I heard Murali Vijay and S. Badrinath were tamilians. I suggest you take your political statements to another website that tolerates such nonsense..
