India team for SA series

In the previous post, Mohan had speculated what the Indian team would like for the South Africa series, as a number of players were out due to injury. The selectors have named the team and this is what they have come up with  –

  • Virender Sehwag
  • Gautam Gambhir
  • M Vijay
  • S Badrinath
  • Sachin Tendulkar
  • VVS Laxman
  • MS Dhoni/Wriddhiman Saha
  • Harbhajan Singh
  • Zaheer Khan
  • Amit Mishra/Pragyan Ojha
  • Ishant Sharma/Sudeep Tyagi/Abhimanyu Mithun

On the surface, this may look OK, but there are a couple of things I just don’t get:

2 Wicketkeepers for a home series

I don’t see the point of having 2 wicket keepers for a home series – unless Dhoni’s back is really dodgy. Is it? In which case, he shouldn’t be picked in the team in the first place – it really is not in the team’s best long term interests to risk Dhoni.

It was really interesting to see DK being dropped from the team. If there were 2 ‘keepers picked in the team, I would have punted that the other would be Dinesh Karthik. But the reserve WK musical chair goes on, with Saha being given a chance. I am not sure he will get a game, though…

Bowler/Batsman ratio

It looks like Badrinath may finally make his debut. And although, people may argue that Kaif is the in-form player or that Raina should have been picked, I have no problem with picking Badri in the team. What irks me though is that we have 6 batsmen for the 6 spots in the team and 7 bowlers for the 4 bowling spots. It just doesn’t add up. We should have picked up either Raina, Rohit Sharma or even Kaif as a backup. With 2 regular batsmen out of the team, I don’t see India playing a 5 batsmen-5 bowler combination.

And, I don’t see Mithun getting a game ahead of Ishant Sharma or Sudeep Tyagi either. If he does, then that would be a grave injustice to Tyagi.

What is the point of picking someone in the team if they weren’t in serious contention? Unless of course, the selectors know something we don’t…

  1. This is a team only for the first game. I think performance in the Board presidents game will influence selection for 2nd test match.

  2. tough tour for sa their winning chances depends mainly on playing spin

  3. Good points Mahesh.

However, it is possibile that given his crook back Dhoni plays as a bat and Saha as WK?

Like you, I would have liked to see Raina or Kohli in the team. What irks me more is that neither Kohli nor Raina are in the BP XI either. The BP XI team is:

    Abhinav Mukund
    Ajinkya Rahane
    Cheteshwar Pujara
    Rohit Sharma (capt)
    Manish Pandey / Shikhar Dhawan
    Parthiv Patel (wk)
    Abhishek Nayar
    Piyush Chawla
    R Ashwin
R Vinay Kumar / Umesh Yadav / Manpreet Gony
    Abhimanyu Mithun

This is a good BP XI. Good to see Abhinav Mukund there and also Umesh Yadav from Vidarba.

  4. BTW, as for pacemen, I think the selectors are doing this as a way to build bench strength and to keep players honest. In recent tours we’ve had Munaf Patel, Pankaj Singh, Praveen Kumar, Dhawal Kulkarni, Sudeep Thyagi, et al come in and be with the team. Now it is Mithun’s chance to know that he is there are thereabouts. Makes sense?

  5. Srikanth Mangalam

Why is it good to see Umesh Yadav? Who is Umesh Yadav? It is indeed very strange that Kohli and Raina do not find themselves in the BP XI. Pray, why Shikar Dhawan???

  6. Srikanth Mangalam

It looks increasingly likely that the Indian middle order will be held together by two players from Chennai and dominated by South Zone for the next two test matches. Is that a good thing or is the pressure on Tendulkar that much more?

  7. Dominated by South Zone? Do you really think any batting line up which has Sehwag and Tendulkar in it can be dominated by any other players? Who do you think South Africa want to dismiss most badly? Who do you think can hurt South Africa the most?

Domination by South Zone has never been good for the India side. Batsmen from Tamil Nadu have been modest performers so far. Krishnamachari Srikanth and Wookeri Raman won’t make anybody’s first XI.

Even so, it is true that Tamil Nadu has been producing plenty of talent recently. Murali Vijay is talented, as is Dinesh Karthik. I hope Badrinath is too. If i wanted to be mischievious i might have said it had something to do with the fact that Srikanth is chairman of selectors 🙂

I guess my point is, that i fair to see how a south zone dominated batting line up places more pressure on Tendulkar? Are you saying that batsmen from the south zone can’t play? If so, please leave VVS and Rahul Dravid out of your “south zone” 🙂 Cos they can play!
